My parents came out to visit Ty and me a couple of weeks ago, and it was so fun for me to get a little mini vacation while they were here! We did most of downtown Boston in the spring with the rest of my family, and they've been there quite a few times, so we tried to do some different things we hadn't done before. It was such a fun week!
The first day they were here we drove up to Sharon, VT (such a pretty drive) and went to the Joseph Smith Birthplace Memorial. I had never heard much about this, but they had a really cool visitors center and a tour given by the always great senior missionaries.
We're standing in front of the monument that one of the prophets had made to commemorate Joseph Smith's birthplace in the early 1900's. If anyone has a chance to go to Sharon I would recommend it, very cool!
The next day we drove down to Newport, RI and went through some of the preserved mansions down there. This is my parents on the lawn behind one of the huge ones. You can't take any pictures inside, so I don't have anything to give an idea of how they were, but absolutely agonizingly opulent would sum them up I suppose. Fun to see how they lived though! I would love to live in a time where you got dressed up for a ball every night!

The three of us enjoying our lunch and the tours :)
I wish I had gotten some more pictures, and probably my favorite thing about the day was the neat little town of Newport, such a cool beach/college/hang out town. I want to live there!
The next day my mom humored me and went on the Freedom Trail in Boston with me (it was her third or fourth time, but I'd never done it), while my dad did some work north of the city.
Amidst all of our walking (which was A LOT, including getting ourselves lost somewhere outside the city and calling 3 cabs in an attempt to get rescued), this is the only picture we got. We're in the North Church, which is where Paul Revere hung the lanterns...you know, 'One if by land, Two if by sea'. It was fun to see all the historical stuff...and I think both my mom and I are good on the Freedom Trail for awhile.
That night we met up with my dad and went to a Red Sox game. I really love baseball games, and my parents and I have had a chance to go to one everywhere I've lived for the past couple summers (the Minnesota Twins, and the Pittsburgh Pirates), but this was the first one where the stadium was actually full! Red Sox fans are definitely the best, and it was really fun being there!
So I just looked at this picture and the stadium is not full at all! Haha, but this was before the game started, so just envision all those empty seats full by the time it started...the Red Sox haven't had a game not sell out in something like a billion years. Cool.
On my parents last day we headed up to Concord, where lots of famous authors lived and where Walden Pond is. Concord was a really cute town and it was fun just being in it for the day...and I was able to put my American Lit skills to the test...I wish that class hadn't been so long ago, but it was really cool to see all of the stuff!
This is at Author's Ridge, where a lot of the early American authors are buried:
Henry David Thoreau and family's graves...that's right, the one that lived on Walden Pond
Ralph Waldo Emerson's grave...the one who let Thoreau use his property on Walden Pond, and also the one who made his wife change her name in order to marry him. First name that is.
Nathaniel Hawthorne and family graves...of Scarlet Letter fame, amongst many others. Although it's unclear why exactly he's buried in Concord because he only lived there for a very short time.
Louisa May Alcott's grave...Little Women, didn't everyone love that book when they were little?
My mom and I also went on tours through the Emerson house (which I would not recommend to any one who may be pregnant, and/or have a hard time with stifling heat and extremely slow tour guides), and the Alcott house. I loved going through the Alcott house...Mr. and Mrs. Alcott were way ahead of their time as far as awesome parents go.
We made it over to Walden Pond, but the original Thoreau house was apparently torn down and used for a chicken coop...so we did not get to see that. And while I would imagine most of you would picture Walden Pond as a serene, transcendental-like, quiet pond, like I did, it's actually a poppin' beach party with swimmers and sunbathers everywhere. Kind of funny, and it did look amazing to swim in!
After all of our author-ing, we drove out to Hull and spent a relaxing close to the day at the beach.
I'm so glad my parents were able to come, and we fit a whole lot into a little time! August is already flying by, so I'll be seeing them again in no time!
Soon to come, more family fun after I meet my sis-in-law Ashley in NY on Monday for some big city pregnant girl shopping!
